Last week I spent the happiest day working on placing and selecting artwork pieces for our Botanical Gardens project. It’s days like this that I especially enjoy what I do.

Never shy of colour, our clients were enthusiastically selecting many different pieces and mediums to adorn their walls. We are all so looking forward to this final layer of interest and creativity to be brought into the project by the very clever @marcuswells_havilanddesigns 🩷🖤🩵

Working with skilled craftspeople is one of our favourite parts of the job. On a current project we have commissioned two bespoke pieces of art by the very talented @natashahulse_design.

We have been working with Natasha to create something very personal to our client’s master bedroom. Basing the design on flora and fauna found in Las Vegas, where our clients have a holiday home, she is coming up with a very special painted appliqué design.

We are so looking forward to see the ideas become reality! The image shown here is of a recent work that Natasha has completed that we just love.

This was a wonderful project to work. Our client wanted to bring influences from her travels, her family and her artwork into the interior design. She also had a bold approach to colour and pattern which meant that the design was fun and vibrant.

Having worked and lived in Japan where she collected vintage obi fabrics, she wanted to make these a starting point for the colour palette in the project. We picked our favourite obis and then developed the colour schemes and fabric choices around them. The obis were then made into cushions or framed as artwork for those particular rooms.

We also found a company that sells exquisite Japanese Chyogami paper and papered the downstairs cloakroom and home office with them to further the theme of a Japanese aesthetic. We even covered her office files in the same paper.

One of the many joys of this project was the relationship that was built with the client from her being hesitant to bring in a designer at the start when she was working with the architect and main contractor, to her whole heartedly embracing and enjoying the process once she had us on board. This level of client relationship is something we really pride ourselves in.

Following on from our last post - the background behind the name Wilding & Wolfe - we would like to tell you about our second female champion, Elsie De Wolfe.

Elsie de Wolfe was an American actress, born in 1859, who became a very prominent interior designer and author. Born in New York City, de Wolfe was acutely sensitive to her surroundings from her earliest years and became one of the first female interior decorators, replacing dark and ornate Victorian decor with lighter, simpler styles and uncluttered room layouts.

Her 1926 marriage to English diplomat Sir Charles Mendl was seen as a marriage of convenience, although she was proud to be called Lady Mendl. Since 1892, de Wolfe had been living openly in a lesbian relationship with Elisabeth Marbury, with whom she lived in New York and Paris.

A hilarious anecdote can be found in her autobiography, where de Wolfe, called herself a “rebel in an ugly world.” Her sensitivity to style and colour was acute from childhood. Arriving home from school one day, she found her parents had redecorated the drawing room:
“She ran [in] ... and looked at the walls, which had been papered in a [William] Morris design of gray palm-leaves and splotches of bright red and green on a background of dull tan. Something terrible that cut like a knife came up inside her. She threw herself on the floor, kicking with stiffened legs, as she beat her hands on the carpet.... She cried out, over and over: ‘It’s so ugly! It’s so ugly.’”

Many people may not know that our business name is the bringing together of the names of two really strong and inspirational women from history; Emily Wilding Davison and Elsie De Wolfe. With International Women’s Day being celebrated this week, it feels fitting to remember these influential women and give you some background behind the name.

Emily Wilding Davison, as many will be aware, was an English suffragette who fought for votes for women in Britain in the early twentieth century. A member of the Women’s Social and Political Union and a militant fighter for her cause, she was arrested on nine occasions, went on hunger strike seven times and was force-fed on forty-nine occasions. Very sadly she died for her cause after being hit by King George V’s horse Anmer at the 1913 Derby when she walked onto the track during the race, to gain publicity for the Suffragette movement. Without trailblazing women like Emily, fighting for votes for women, we would not be where we are today.

At Wilding & Wolfe one of the things we value highest is craftsmanship, especially British and even better still, local. On one of our Sheffield projects we have also been involved in the landscape and garden design and it’s been a real pleasure bringing @sheffield_woodcraft into this aspect of the project.

Andrew makes beautiful but functional wood products using traditional and heritage techniques, sourced from our local woods using regenerative forestry methods, in a hope of helping to strengthen our connection to these spaces.

These stunning woven oak screens add such a feeling of interest in the garden spaces where so often modern, characterless options are chosen. I am so looking forward to the planting to be in place around these screens so they can really bed in and become part of the maturing garden.

This stunning @kateguinnessdesign kitchen to me, is kitchen perfection. The soft and dreamy powdery pink and blue complimented by the timeless Carrara marble and grounded by the timber high level cabinets. The gentle eclecticism of the cabinet style and the Italian glass lights and the relaxed, vintage feel of the furnishings. It’s an interior masterpiece and a lovely thing to gaze at, at the end of the week.

This project has been a long time in the making but we still get so excited each time something new is added, getting us closer and closer to our original design vision. The impact of this sunny @christopherfarrcloth wallpaper is just what our client was looking for, in this fun guest bedroom.

It is not uncommon for our projects to span over many years, this one is almost at the four year mark, and for clients to add furnishings in stages. Especially after significant building works some of the the interior package can be pushed into a phase II, but we design with everything in mind so that in time, everything can be implemented.
